5 Tips to Raise Your Credit Score

By Scott J. Wilson RISMEDIA, August 6, 2011—(MCT)—The higher your credit scores, the better shot you have of getting a loan or credit card application approved. Improving your credit scores takes time, but it can be done. Start by getting free copies of your three major credit reports at the government-authorized site annualcreditreport.com.

    1. Check your reports for accuracy. Financial columnist Liz Weston, author of “Your Credit Score,” says to look for credit cards or other accounts that aren’t yours, negative entries that are more than seven years old, duplicate past-due items and incorrect Social Security number or date of birth.

How to Choose the Right Home for Your Family

You’ve probably heard more than once that today’s perfect storm of low prices, high inventory, and affordable interest rates are making this the right time for you to buy that home you’ve always wanted. As you begin to shop around, however, there are several important criteria to consider in order to make the best choice for you and your family.

Discuss the following with your real estate agent before you begin looking for a home. This will help narrow down the choices and shorten the search process:

Type of home: One-story or two, single-family, duplex or condo? How will paying homeowner dues affect your overall buying power? Will a swimming pool be a bonus or a hindrance? Making these decisions in advance will help you focus on the right types of home to look at.

New or existing: A new home is all...[read more...]

Claim Financial Independence All Year Long

    By Kara McGuire

RISMEDIA, July 12, 2011— (MCT)—With your Fourth of July cookout and fireworks watching over, why not take some time to reclaim your financial freedom?

Nagging money issues can put a chokehold on our lives. And in the weekly hustle, it can be hard to carve out time to tackle our financial to-do list. Granted, many money-related matters that can increase your financial independence—think increasing income or getting out of debt—take a lot longer than a day. But you have to start somewhere. Devote a couple of hours in the hammock with your laptop and you’d be surprised at how much you can accomplish. Here are a handful of ideas:

Start with Your Future: Are you saving for retirement? I hope the answer is yes, especially if your company offers free matching money when you save a certain amount. Have you looked at your 401(k) or IRA performance lately? Take a look. The second quarter wasn’t...[read more...]

Today as I drove through Napa I was thinking about "what is freedom?" After all, the Fourth of July is a good time to think about that (USA's birthday is July 4th).

Freedom is the ability to do what you want without worrying about what other people think. My friend +Jesse Stay has written about religious persecution (he's a Mormon, an organization that has faced its share of such) and I am glad me and him have the ability to believe any damn thing we want without facing too much persecution.

It is freedom to love whoever you want. In some countries my wife...[read more]

10 Quotes to Inspire You to Do More Good

You work hard to support the causes that are important to you, and you're not alone. Just listen to what some of the great authors, politicians, and activists of the world have to say about making a difference. Their words speak to the impact you -- or any single -- person can have on the world.

    2. "Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart." - Elizabeth Andrew
