We, in Firestone Park homes, take great pride in our community and it's small business's. We make it a point to keep our money and our shopping very local. We are blessed with salons, restaurants, mechanics, florists and almost everything else you might need without going more than a mile.

What's the first thing you think of on a Saturday watching Ohio State Buckeyes football or when friends come over? PIZZA, if you are like us. We are so lucky to have award winning Decheco's Pizza in our neighborhood. Freshly made from scratch daily, everyone always gets their famous "White Pizza" with an order of wings and potatoes.

Jack DeCheco opened a small barber shop on Main Street in 1978 and added the pizza shop next door 15 years later. "My wife, Shirley, was a hairdresser," he explains. "One day she fell, broke her ankle, and had to be off work for awhile. We missed her income and decided to start making our own ‘dough,'" he jokes, flashing his trademark, huge smile. Everyone in Firestone Park knows and loves Jack DeCheco for his warmth, smile and great sense of humor. Not to mention, the Pizza!

DeCheco's Pizza is best known for good humor and the latest news from Firestone Park homes, as Jack is clued in on everything going on in the "Park" with a side of stand-up comedy from a guy who has loved using the clippers for 40 years. Occasionally, DeCheco has to leave the chair and scissors behind and hurry next door to the pizza shop. "Someone will knock on the wall, and I'll know they need help," he says.

Noting that his barber shop/pizzeria is only five houses away from his childhood home, Jack DeCheco jokes, "A dentist who didn't believe in Novocain practiced in this location back then. At least now, there's no more screaming." Too much fun with your great DeCheco's Pizza.

No one leaves DeCheco's pizza without great food and a smile. One of Firestone Park Homes classics!

Amedeo's Florist in Firestone Park Ohio

We are very fortunate to have Amedeo's Florist as such a wonderful friend and business in Akron Ohio and Firestone Park Ohio. They are very community oriented by supplying churches, funerals and weddings at great prices for Firestone Park buyers. I know my own church is always beautiful and fragrant with flowers everywhere and, a lot of times, they were donated by the Amedeo's Florist, who attend there regularly.

Amedeo's Florist have been serving as an Akron Ohio florist and Firestone Park florist for over 50 years. In fact, I bought my first corsage there for my HS sophomore dance and my first real date, many years ago. (Won't say how many!) I only had a couple bucks in my pocket, but it was a beautiful flower and my date was very pleased. I still don't know if I paid enough. I remember the lady had a big smile on her face as she knew it must have been my first time buying a flower. I will never forget that day! It was beautiful and fragrant then and their flowers and arrangements are always superb now. Amedeo's Florist takes great pride in customer satisfaction as, still, a family owned business, and it shows from your first visit.

As such, Amedeo's Florist have always had a special place in my heart and I highly recommend them to anyone who asks me for a great florist in Akron Ohio and our florist in Firestone Park Ohio!

  • Ido Bar & Grill and Kevin O'Bryans in Akron Ohio

Well, shocking, another local business review by me on "Food"! This one is easy, as I have been a fan of the Ido Bar & Grill in Firestone Park Ohio for many, many years, even before my friends, Steve and Marcy Baker bought it in 1998. They both had many years of experience at another fabulous restaurant in Firestone Park named Guy's. When Guy's changed their format from a restaurant to party center and catering, Steve, the chef, and Marcy, the hostess manager, took a big step and bought the Ido Bar & Grill. It had changed hands several times from it's glory days into bad versions of a neighborhood bar. Gone were the menu items that had made the Ido Bar & Grill famous, not only in Firestone Park but all over the Akron Ohio area.

Steve and Marcy did not waste any time as the food was awesome from opening night. Back was the Famous "oozing" Ido Burger, giant chef's salad, chicken diablo (my wifes favorite) and the Hungarian sausage. Steve did not stop there, however. He was known for his steaks at Guy's and he did not disappoint at the Ido Bar & Grill. Steak to die for; huge Louisiana Rib Eye, Swiss steak and large filets that melt in your mouth. And do you want to know a secret? Don't pass on the 2 huge pork chops basted in your favorite seasoning, oh my!

Don't take my word for it, although you can. Here is our major paper review in The Akron Beacon Journal, written by a well known and trusted food critic. The full menu and more information on the Ido Bar & Grill, here.

With the success of the Ido Bar and Grill, Steve and Marcy did our neighborhood of Firestone Park another huge favor. They bought and redecorated a very old bar that was in dire need of either being torn down or revived. And revived they did! It is now, in my opinion, the best Irish Pub in Akron Ohio, Kevin O'Bryans. As awesome family people, the Pub is named after two of their sons. Their daughter Missy is the very capable manager. The menu and more information on Kevin O'Bryan's here.

What better time to showcase our Firestone Country Club in Akron Ohio? This week some of the best golfers in the world are here for the annual Bridgestone Invitational, as it is called now. Tiger is here and has won 6 times already, going for an historic number 7! Who can forget his shot in the dark to win several years ago in 2000? Instant classic!

We, living in Firestone Park Ohio, always know when this time of year is near. The signs go up everywhere around us for directions and parking. They set up many lots with busing available to make your day easy and special. The blimp with its cameras for great overhead shots is always visible from my home this week. I think Tiger could probably hit a ball to my Firestone Park neighborhood.

This week, a restored short film came out that shows Harvey Firestone teeing off for the grand opening of Firestone Country Club on August 10, 1929. If you have read any of my posts on my home, Firestone Park Ohio, you know some of the many things this great man did for our area. Harvey built the park for his employees to enjoy. Since the '60's it has been mostly a country club and some what difficult for the public to play on without invitation. They did open a nine hole public course in 1999 and it is a great place to play and have a great lunch or dinner. Hackers Restaurant opened there with a driving range attached, that stays very busy in the summer. The restaurant is open all year around and because of it's affordable, good food does quite well. I highly recommend Hackers Bar & Grill for it's good food, atmosphere and cozy bar with generous drinks.

Enjoy our very own Firestone Country Club on national TV this week and think of me as I will be around. I will toast all of my good ActiveRain friends at Hackers Bar & Grill as Tiger gets number 7!

Update, Flash!!! Tiger does win Number 7 at Firestone Country Club Akron Ohio

  • Stricklands Ice Cream in Akron Ohio

Posted Under: Shopping & Local Amenities in Akron  |  August 10, 2009 4:38 PM  |  115 views  |  No comments

I know, every small town has a fabulous ice cream stand. We have Strickland's Ice Cream in Akron Ohio. People cannot wait for spring and summer to flock to and enjoy Strickland's Ice Cream in Akron Ohio's famous vanilla, chocolate and the flavor of the day. My wife has Strickland's website on her desktop, ready and willing to fly off at a moments notice when her favorite flavors flash on her screen. Luckily, it's only 5 minutes from our Firestone Park home. I just had coconut in a waffle cone, today actually, with my photo excursion above. It was awesome too! Nothing like fresh ice cream to fix what ails you.

Strickland's Frozen Custard was founded in 1936 by Bill and Florence Strickland. During his years as an Akron Pure Milk employee, Bill developed his own rich recipe of cream, eggs, sugar and other ingredients. With his formula perfected, Bill turned his attention to finding an ice cream machine that would quickly freeze the ice cream, while limiting the air whipped into the product. The result was Strickland's award winning frozen custard.

Bill and Florence built the first Strickland's Frozen Custard stand on Triplett Avenue in Akron, Ohio, and the Strickland's legend was born. It is across the street from Akron Municipal Airport. As a pilot, I have actually flown in with guests to savor some Strickland's Ice Cream. I call that the $100 ice cream cone.

The original stand, above, is still in operation today, run by the third generation of the Strickland's family, and serving the same fantastic ice cream that made Strickland's a local Akron Ohio landmark. Everyone within 50 miles of Akron Ohio knows and has been to Strickland's Ice Cream. Probably many times. Once you take the kids, it's over!

In 2002, Strickland's Marketing Corp. was formed to duplicate the success of the original Strickland's. After reverse-engineering machines that proved to produce the same great taste as the originals, Strickland's Ice Cream in Akron Ohio is now offering franchises in select markets. We now have several in Akron Ohio but there is something special about cruising over to the original.

Eagle Auto and Tire in Firestone Park Ohio
is one of those necessary business's that become all important when you need them. You know, the car is making funny sounds, the air is not working, the tires are going bump, bump, bump. Isn't this one of those things that go super critical when they happen? I know, for me, nothing grinds to a halt faster than when the car goes nuclear. "Ohhhh Noooo! What am I gonna do now? This is going to cost me a fortune, I'm a Realtor between closings! Life sucks!"

Well, we all know how critical it can be on who to trust with one of our most important possessions. THE CAR! Lucklily for us, we have Eagle Auto and Tire in Firestone Park Ohio. This family owned business has been in Firestone Park forever, it seems. The owners have been great neighbors and are involved in almost anything going on that concerns our families. Little league, local politics and supporting the local restaurants and other business's, among others that they are too humble to mention.

You always feel like you got a great deal at Eagle Auto and were not hammered with things that other places want to "add" on. You all know that sinking feeling in your stomach, just what else are they going to find? I have even heard Walt or Steve say to others while I was waiting, "Don't worry, those shocks will wait awhile." I have pulled in with something not quite right on my car and went to pay when I was leaving, only to hear, that's no charge today David, no big deal! WOW, has that happened to you very often in a car shop!?

Therefore, I highly recommend trusting your "baby" to Eagle Auto and Tire in Firestone Park Ohio. Just say, David sent me, and you won't be sorry..............great folks! Located at:

    Firestone Park.

In 1916, Harvey Firestone embarked on creating a neighborhood with tree-lined boulevards curved around a central park to accommodate his growing work force. He saw many families of different income levels living together in diverse styles of homes (See pictures). He saw churches, schools and stores within walking distance. Harvey Firestone donated the land if a school, church, bank, library or any other structure would benefit the neighborhood.

Harvey Firestone. Our Harvey will be in Firestone Park forever!

Harvey Firestone hired his estate landscape architect, Alling S. DeForest, to design the layout for Firestone Park. Akron officials have pushed the limits of the area beyond its original borders. City publications draw the park as far south as Firestone Country Club, annexed from Coventry Township in 1985.

Firestone Park is located in south Akron; bordering Coventry Twp. Firestone Park has easy access to two freeways, Interstate 77 and Interstate 277 / U.S. Highway 224. The 2000 U.S. census can explain the attraction objectively. It paints a portrait of an educated working-class population with good incomes and home values within driving distance to major metropolitan areas. Cleveland is only 40 minutes away from Firestone Park. Columbus, and Ohio State Football, is an easy two hour drive.

Firestone Park, itself, a public park shaped like the original Firestone Shield emblem, (see aerial picture) is at the heart of the community. It is surrounded by churches, a school, a community center, a new public library, and a small business district, affectionately, called Aster Avenue by us long time Park people. Generations of school children have played in the Park and bought everything from Emil's pizza to Lucky Shoes on Aster Avenue.

Firestone Park has been, and still is, a great place to live and raise a family!

We call this a mansion in Firestone Park! Typical Firestone Park Cape. Firestone Park Colonial.
