MadisonÂ is theÂ capitalÂ of theÂ U.S. stateÂ ofÂ WisconsinÂ and theÂ county seatÂ ofÂ Dane County. As of July 1, 2011, Madison had a population of 236,901.Â making it the second largest city in Wisconsin, afterÂ Milwaukee, and theÂ 81st largestÂ in the United States.Â
Madison is located in the center of Dane County in south-central Wisconsin, 77 miles (124Â km) west ofÂ MilwaukeeÂ and 122 miles (196Â km) northwest ofÂ Chicago. The city completely surrounds the smallerÂ Town of Madison, the City ofÂ Monona, and theÂ villagesofÂ Maple BluffÂ andÂ Shorewood Hills. Madison shares borders with its largest suburb,Â Sun Prairie, and three other communities,Â Middleton,Â McFarlandÂ andÂ Fitchburg. The city's boundaries also approach the villages ofÂ Verona,Â Cottage Grove,Â DeForest, andWaunakee.
According to theÂ United States Census Bureau, Madison's area is 84.7 square miles (219.4Â km2), of which, 68.7 square miles (177.9Â km2) of it is land and 16.0 square miles (41.4Â km2) of it (18.9%) is water.Â
