As with many comments from the news media the death of SUMMER 2009 was way over-hyped. And this prognosis was a huge dis-service to families planning their summer vacations. Here on the beautiful Gulf Coast of Alabama at Dauphin Island we have had 100% occupancy for several weeks.
Many last minute calls have been coming in for rentals with the opening line fed direct from the news media financial/travel gurus, "I am calling for your last minute special" or "What kind of discount do you have for ocean front homes?". Invariably, we have had to educate these families that we do NOT have any last minute deals as we are at full island occupancy or at the very least "may" have a rental away from the water in the "village". The new Holiday Isle Condos have had some specials as this is a new and largely unknown facility but has been filling up as well with vacationers-bookings for 2010.
Maybe some areas have experienced a reduction in accessible in 2009 but the island is at capacity and looking forward to the wonderful fall season when things slow down and us island folks have time to relax.
Of course, do not get me wrong. We love to have our old friends from all over come and visit (we plan sunset toasts for months in advance), we also love showing newcomers what we love about DI and even at our busiest we are a laid back village of diverse incomes, lifestyle and even quite a few scientists (Who frequent the famous Dauphin
Island Sea Lab
We also have some great isolated beaches protected by the beachfront golf course (Isle accessible), private beaches accessible only through gated single family beachfront communities such as DeSoto Landing
(also adjacent to golf course), Audubon Place (adjacent to gulf front Audubon Bird Sanctuary).
With this activity has also come a renewed interest in home and homesite purchases. Just over these last couple of months we have seen an upsurge of interest and contracts in gated DeSoto Landing, boat lovers haven Pass Drury, luxury Holiday Isle
beach front condos and more modest retirement home lots in the Pines and Village.
So, as always do not trust the newspaper, radio or TV when it comes to your vacation or retirement destination. Check it out for yourself before the last minute or risk a disappointment. Yes there are some great deals but, they will not last long.
