My Favorite Places in the Town of Framingham

The Town of Framingham was first settled along a trail known as Old Connecticut Path.  Now, that is Route 126 which runs north to south from Ashland up through North Framingham and into Sudbury.  Framingham is rich in history and is also a place of commerce. Some of the best spots in town are:

    The Golden Triangle

This area consists mainly of a three square miles on the westerly side of Framingham, bordered by Route 9 (Worcester Road), Route 30 (Cochituate Road) and Speen Street. Since 1993 this original are was expanded to include areas north of Route 30 including parts of Old Connecticut Path.

The Golden Triangle in the Town of Framingham is home to mega shopping in the MetroWest, including Shopper's World, Lowes, Home Depot and some excellent restaurants.  My favorite movie theatre, AMC General Cinema is also part of the offerings in the Triangle.

    Nobscot Village

In the heart of northwest Framingham is the community of Nobscot Village. The name "Nobscot" was taken from the Algonquin word Penobscot meaning "the place where the rocks open out."  The earlier settlers shortened it to Nobscot.  This is a sleepy little village, not quite as developed as the rest of Framingham.

Nobscot is graced with some very pretty neighborhoods, parks, historic landmarks and some actual farm land still exists there.

Callahan State Park  My Favorite Places in the Town of Framingham

Still one of the best kept secrets in the Metrowest, Callahan State Park consists of nearly 100 acres of open fields. You can find corn and other crops planted here during the summer months.

Directly across from the Mill Farm Public Golf Course, this is a great place for hiking and dog walking.  There are some well-marked trails throughout the park and plenty of spots for picnicking.

    Framingham Town Centre Common

This is a wonderful spot for history buffs.  Along with being the site of summer concerts on the green, the Town Centre Common is home to three important historic buildings.

The Edgell Memorial Library was originally built to commemorate the valor of Civil War soldiers.

The Old Academy is a Greek Rival temple that was built in 1837. Its primary use was that of school and is now part of the history of Framingham.

    • The Framingham Village Hall, built in 1834, still stands as an important building in the National Historic Register. It now serves as a hall for private functions.

And, overlooking all of it is the elegant statue of the Civil War Soldier

And lastly, but not the least, is a street after my own heart - and name.  Located in a nice residential area in North Framingham, Claudette Circle certainly has a nice ring to it.

Callahan State Park - Framingham MassachusettsOne of the Best Kept Secrets in Framingham - Callahan State Park

One of the best kept secrets in the MetroWest area is Callahan State Park in Framingham.

Located across from Mill Farm Public Golf Course on Millwood Street, the park is really more like a series of mini parks.  The 820-acre area has seven miles of marked trails. The trails are used for hiking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing.

You will find in Callahan State Park that there are nearly 100 acres of open fields.  Seventy acres are currently under agriculture lease and many people actually plant some pretty substantial crops on these grounds in the summer months. You can see the fields of corn as you walk through these lovely grounds.

The park is situated right in the middle of a residential area and is friendly to those who love to take their dogs out and remove the lease to let them run free.  At the park's entrance you will find special pet instructions and plastic bags to allow you to pick up after your pet.

Within Callahan State Park there is a pond and grasslands that are outstretched for miles.

Take a ride around and explore North Framingham's beautiful wooded sections and you never know what you will find.

A Handsome Soldier in Framingham - Massachusetts

What is about a man in uniform?

I was out looking at properties for a client yesterday in Framingham when I came upon this striking statue of a civil war soldier.  Of course I had to take his photograph and I was completely curious about who he was.

Checking the base of the statue I found that there was no information on his identity at all - only that he had been donated to the town of Framingham.

Since this Civil War Soldier stands proudly in front of the Framingham Historical Society, I went inside the building to ask more about the mystery man.  I then met two very helpful ladies who explained to me that he is known as the "Unknown Civil War Soldier." Very intriguing...

Inside of that building is the Edgell Memorial Library which was built to commemorate the valor of Civil War soldiers.  This was Framingham's first actual library. With its Gothic windows and historical data contained within, it stands as a significant building in Framingham's history.

This historic library was built in 1872 and was saved from demolition in 1963. There is on-going support as well as campaigns for additional funding to complete its restoration including its magnificent Gothic windows.

The Edgell Memorial Library is one of the few Victorian Gothic style buildings remaining in the area. It sits on the Town Centre Common and is joined by two other important historical structures, The Old Academy and the Village Hall.

The Old Academy is a Greek Rivival temple that was built in 1837.  It replaced the Framingham Academy which was part of Benjamin Franklin's "academy movement." It was originally used by the Framingham schools from 1851 to 1915. The inside is structured in the tradition of original school houses that were built to separate the boys from the girls and the interior still maintains the original blackboards and light fixures.A Handsome Solider in Framingham - Massachusetts

The Framingham Village Hall was built in 1834 by designs from Solomon Willard who designed the Bunker Hill Monument and Dexter Henenway.  It was originally used as the town's second town hall and is on the National Historic Register. It now serves as a hall for private functions.

These three historic buildings make up the substance of the Town Centre Common in Framingham - and, the handsome Civil War soldier keeps an eyeful watch over all.
