St. Patrick's Day - Boston Massachusetts

In a city where Irish are dominant - think "Kennedy"- the spirit of St. Patrick holds a special place in the hearts of many.

Since 1737, Boston has held one of the nation's largest St Patrick's Day parades and boasts more Irish pubs than any other place in the country.

Here is a sampling of events for the annual festivities:

    Celtic Rock and Roll

The Harpoon Brewery in Boston sponsors the Harpoon St. Patrick's Festival with a cash bar and food vendors serving corned beef and cabbage plus other appropriate dishes for the day.  The big draw here will be the Irish Rock and Roll bands from the area. (Do we hear U2 anywhere close by?)

    Dropkick Murphys

I saw this Irish group last summer as they opened for Aerosmith at the Comcast Center. Their music was featured in the hit film "The Departed" and they do put on a lively show complete with marching band.

The Dropkick Murphys will be featured this week at the House of Blues March 12 through 17.

St. Patrick's Day at the JFK Library

To honor a great American and our 35th President, a visit to his library and museum will be timely this week.  The library is open from 9 a.m to 5 p.m daily and is currently featuring two special exhibits:  "The Making of a President" and "Poetry and Power - The Inaugural Address of John F. Kennedy."

The Big Parade in South Boston

Undeterred by the wet weather this weekend, the 109th St. Patrick's Day Parade went off as scheduled.  It started at 1:00 pm.at the Broadway MBTA station and ended in Andrew Square.  Shamrock glass mugs and tall Abe Lincoln-style green hats were seen throughout the crowd.

More St. Patrick's Day Parades are scheduled for the Massachusetts towns of Abington (March 21), Holyoke (March 21) and Lawrence (March 21.)

    The National Irish Fiddle Championship

10-time National Irish Fiddle Champion, Seamus Connolly will appear at the Tamo Bar at the Seaport Hotel in Boston on St. Patrick's Day, March 17. Along with the music will be the traditional boiled dinner, Shepherd's Pie and other delights.

It's going to be a fabulous week for all of the true Irish as well as many of us "wannabes." Put on your best green fedora and have a great time.
