The 15th annual Big Country Balloon Festival, Abilene Texas is lifting off this weekend bigger and better than ever, organized by Abilene’s Optimist Club.

The festival took in about $60,000 last year, a major fundraiser for the Abilene’s Optimist Club. Money raised is used for scholarships for area students.

Arrived just after liftoff & watched 14 or so balloons fly away over the Mall of Abilene.

    The Forge

The Forge restaurant community based kitchen on South 1st Street in Abilene. What is that you say... of All things it's a non-profit business. Opened up around October last year in the old Grinders Building. I had been meaning to stop in and find out what the food and the place was about so when the chance came up I jumped at it. I had just eaten so; I was just there to enjoy the experience.

From what I can tell the food is very affordable, the Manager has got to be one of the nicest people in town with a huge heart and lends her time and energy to helping people in need.

I would suggest that everyone in Abilene make a stop in, see what it is about. Have a meal that you will enjoy and also help local people in need.

Mesquite Grove Golf Course, Dyess AFB TX

I like to think of myself as a guy up for new things. So when the chance to play golf came up, I'm in. Well guess what, I'm not the live action hero I think I am. After thinking it over for a bit. I had not been on a golf course since high school when I ran cross country and had a 29 waist at the most. I went drove the golf cart while others played.

I do think a few days on the range to see if I can hit the ball would be a good idea before heading out on the course.

I don't know a good golf course from a bad one so giving a 3 tell us what you think…

Renee’s Rib Shack at 7th and Butternut opened a few months ago, the building has been used as a doughnut shop and a Mexican restaurant not sure what else. Renee’s services include BBQ, burgers, ribs and all the other food that you’d expect.

We arrived just after 12 noon there was a short line and the restaurant was standing room only, only about 6 tables. I got lucky and got a table soon after placing the order. Seemed like a long time to get our food. I went with a BBQ sandwich VERY GOOD. Worth a stop in!
