Congressional efforts to reduce the U.S. deficit revived tax breaks for mortgage insurance and extended interest deductions for homeowners that will cost the government $600 billion over five years.

    2013 Savings

Homeowners will save about $100 billion this year from mortgage interest deductions, according to Compass Point, helping to make buying more affordable relative to renting. Congress, meanwhile, allowed payroll tax cuts to lapse, which will pull more than $100 billion from the economy, the primary reason why 77.1 percent of U.S. households face higher taxes in 2013, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.

The 64th edition of the Junior Orange Bowl Parade takes place on the streets of Downtown Coral Gables on Sunday, December 30, 2012. The parade begins at 4:00 pm on the corner of Alhambra Circle and Ponce de Leon Boulevard. It will head south to Miracle Mile where it will turn west and make its way toward the grandstand on Biltmore Way in front of Coral Gables City Hall.

Known as the signature event of the Junior Orange Bowl International Youth Festival, the parade features floats, horses, marching bands, live music, and other moving vehicles. Hundreds of children and families attend the celebration of active youth and community every year.

This year's theme, "Sailing to New Adventures," commemorates the 500th anniversary of Ponce de Leon's arrival in Florida.

The parade is free to the public. However, a limited number of grandstand tickets with premium seating can be purchased online. For more information on the Junior Orange Bowl Parade, visit www.jrorangebowl.com.

  • Innovative PayByPhone Technology to Make Parking in the Coral Gables & South Miami More Convenient

Posted Under: Quality of Life in Coral Gables, Shopping & Local Amenities in Coral Gables, In My Neighborhood in Coral Gables  |  October 29, 2012 8:55 PM  |  493 views  |  No comments
For all you quarter carriers, beginning November 1, the City of Coral Gables is rolling out its mobile phone parking payment system to a newer, more convenient PayByPhone technology for approximately 4,200 on-street and surface lot parking spaces throughout the City. Residents and visitors using the new PayByPhone will no longer have to pay a monthly fee or hang a tag in their car as they did with the old park-by-phone.com system... that users can continue with through November 10, at which time they will need to switch to the new system.

There are three easy ways to sign up for and start using the PayByPhone technology: 1) Mobile: download the app that works with most smartphones — the iPhone App Store (iOS 3.1 or later), the Google Play Android Store (Android 2.1 or later), or the BlackBerry App World (BlackBerry 8100 or later); 2) Online: www.paybyphone.com; or 3) Call: toll free 866-990-7275.

Coral Gables is one of the first cities in South Florida to adopt PayByPhone’s cutting-edge Near Field Communication (NFC) technology for smartphones. Once you have signed up for an account, look for the sticker below which identifies a PayByPhone meter. You can use NFC by holding your smartphone near the NFC decal on the parking payment station:

Your registered account information will be automatically recalled, so you only have to enter the displayed parking location number and the length of time desired on your smartphone for a quick and secure credit card transaction to take place. An optional text messaging service reminds you before parking time expires and lets you add time remotely without the hassle of returning to the car. Receipts, which can be viewed and printed online, are emailed to you after your purchase.
PayByPhone is also used in downtown Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and other large cities. This technology will make parking in Coral Gables and throughout South Florida more convenient than ever before. To see frequently asked questions or for more information concerning this technology, please visit www.paybyphone.com or call the City of Coral Gables Parking Department at 305-460-5540.
